Built around the port, it’s a city in itself, and there are different precincts to explore, each with their own personality. From the eclectic North Fremantle, to the historical riverside charm of East Fremantle, or the vibrant heart of Fremantle CBD, there’s something for every type of traveller to experience.
If you’re thinking about where to stay in Fremantle for your next holiday, here’s our quick guide on the key attractions and precincts near our accommodation in Fremantle.
North Fremantle, where culture meets beach life
Not surprisingly, North Fremantle sits on the northern side of the Swan River. It’s home to some of Fremantle’s favourite beaches, including Port Beach, River Beach, and the popular Leighton Beach.
And it’s popular for a reason. Along with the crisp white sand, the low wave conditions make it perfect for swimming and snorkelling, or just lazing around in the water. It’s the ideal family beach, and the animal exercise area at its northern end seals the deal.
North Fremantle is home to an eclectic mix of food and culture. Featuring some of Fremantle’s most loved cafes, bars, and live music venues.
The pristine riverfront is ideal for stand up paddleboarding, and the walking and cycling tracks get you out and about—or right into the middle of Fremantle.
It’s close to Rous Head, too, the northern Fremantle ferry terminal where you can catch a 20-minute ferry across the ocean to Rottnest Island.
If you’re looking for accommodation in North Fremantle that’s right on the water, you can’t go past Pier 21.
With modern, spacious accommodation, and close to the walking tracks, public transport, and main roads, it’s the perfect place to stay when visiting our portside city. Choose from comfortable suites or a range of serviced apartments.

East Fremantle, for the riverside lifestyle with a side of history
As a general rule, most of Fremantle is nestled on the water. East Fremantle is no exception.
Located across the water from North Fremantle, you can discover walking tracks that curve around the Swan River in both directions. Take a walk along the riverside beaches, water lapping at your ankles, or stop off at one of the many parks for a picnic by the river.
Just past Stirling Bridge, you can soak up the sun at the Tradewinds Hotel. It’s the perfect spot for an afternoon pint. Or grab a more substantial meal: enjoy dining with a view out over the Swan River, with seasonal fare and a hand-picked beer and wine list. The kitchen is open from 6:30am until late, for a meal any time of day.
And while they’re not technically East Fremantle—but close enough that it doesn’t matter—you’ll also find the famous Containbow art piece, and have the chance to experience WA’s military history at the Fremantle Military Museum.
Or why not discover the suburb yourself? Take a wander along the East Fremantle Heritage Trail, a 3km walk set up by the Town of East Fremantle, which takes you to 19 local buildings of historical and architectural interest.
Fremantle CBD: the soul of Freo
While the idea of a CBD may not sound exciting, the Fremantle CBD is something else. It’s what gives the city its distinct laid-back vibe.
The winding streets and alleyways provide some of Perth’s best coffee, if you know where to look. You’ll find unique and quirky bars and pubs, with their own distinct Fremantle stamp on them.
You’re close to history, too, with the iconic Round House—the oldest public building in WA—open for tours. If you’re lucky, you might even be able to book a time to fire the cannon.
Just a few minutes’ walk north you can explore the Fremantle Prison, or learn about WA’s nautical history at the WA Maritime Museum, featuring life-size attractions to explore, and immersive cinema experiences.
Fremantle is a town steeped in art, with plenty of art galleries to explore, across a range of mediums.
Get out and lose yourself in the Fremantle Arts Centre, where you can see the latest exhibitions from local and touring artists, or get a hands-on experience with one of their arts workshops.
Take in the hidden street art on a walking tour, peruse the famous Fremantle Markets, or take a dip at the iconic Bathers Beach.
And, when you get hungry, there’s nothing more quintessentially Fremantle than fish and chips on the wharf.
